Activism Update October 2011

The best news of the month legislatively:  AB 189 passed and was signed into law by Gov. Brown.  Although watered down from its original, more potent draft, the bill provides some protection to adult ed programs statewide from arbitrary closure.  It requires that formal, transparent public hearings be announced and held for community response to be heard before any school district in California can close an adult ed program.

On Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011, teachers from CTA State Council, including members of the CTA Adult Education Caucus and LAUSD’s adult ed committee, marched from the Bonaventure to LAUSD HQ on Beaudry Street to support Occupy LAUSD.

UTLA-Adult Ed. Committee Communications Director Julie Carson (holding sign, upper L) & Bob Yorgason (upper center) with others outside LAUSD HQ on Sat. 10-22

CTA-AEC chair Matthew Kogan (below) set up a new office outside Beaudry on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.  Others occupied LAUSD Tuesday, Oct. 18 through Saturday, Oct. 22.
